What is Asexual? - Asexual Awareness.
I was tasked with creating a project within the realm of social justice, so I chose a topic that is very close to my heart: bringing awareness to asexuality, which is the A in LGBTQIA+. As an asexual person, I have always felt that it is widely misunderstood and misrepresented, and hoped to create an experience that people would remember. Below is a mock-up of what the exhibit would look like if it were full size, along with the assets I designed.
I wanted to create a project with a double purpose. The first was to provide viewers with basic facts and common misconceptions about asexuality, while the second brought in a personal aspect of including imagery of myself and public figures who also identify as asexual. This way, viewers can see that there is no single make and model of what asexuality looks like, and it’s more common than you may think.
The view when entering the hallway.
The view when returning.
To emphasize the multi-faceted approach I took, I paired each fact with an image, turned them into lenticulars, and placed them along a hallway where my exhibit would exist. In doing so, viewers would walk past all of the statistics first, and when they turned to walk back, they would realize the personal side of it all. My goal in laying it out like this was to ensure that people were intrigued and perhaps slightly confused on the first part of the walk, so then they can feel enlightened and inspired on the walk back.
The fact and image pairings are included below. On the right side of each pair is the fact, and on the left side of each pair is the public figure’s image with their name and occupation included.

To create the lenticulars, I had to splice the two halves in even sections, and arrange them in an alternating pattern. I then had to print them out and fold accordingly along the sections. When viewed from the correct angle, the optical illusion was now successful. Both stages are shown below.
